Still from 'Paris, Texas' (Wim Wenders, 1984)

Looking over the shoulder of..., FOTODOK’s annual programme that takes a peek into the working lives of photography professionals, focused in 2011 on designer Hans Gremmen. The final presentation and publication Objects in Mirror - The Imagination of The American Landscape is the result of one of his lines of research.

The road movie Easy Rider, Yellowstone National Park, Route 66, Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places or David Lynch’s Twin Peaks; these random names and places immediately fire the imagination. Objects in Mirror shows just how deeply the American landscape has penetrated our daily lives: in films, adverts, books and music. Fact and fiction merge in a landscape that lends itself to being viewed through a frame, be it a car window or a television screen. Using visual work and text, as well as posters, reproductions, facsimiles, paintings and other objects, Gremmen takes us on a journey through his imagination of the American landscape.

Objects in Mirror presents work by  Marie-José Jongerius, Venturi Scott Brown AssociatesHarmen LiemburgHelmut SmitsElian Somers and others. Published to coincide with the exhibition is a book which includes contributions from Rixt Bosma, André Waardenburg, Caroline von Courtenand Raymond Frenken.
