Pipilotti Rist: Expecting
In 2001 the Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist had a solo exhibition at the Centraal Museum. She made the two-part video installation Expecting specially for the show. In the upper and lower chapels of the medieval convent of Saint Agnieten, the earthly and the heavenly are presented as worlds that flow into each other. The curtains that temper the light in the chapel consist of a patchwork of blankets. The sacred space has become an intimate inner world, where violent dreams are played out ‘under the blankets’. The projections include images of crucifixion and branding; the smell of peppermint is a tried and tested means of driving out demons.
The music, specially composed by Rist and performed with Anders Guggisberg and Roli Widmer, amplifies the sense of being carried away by the surging and crashing rhythm of dream images that alternate between the sweet and the nightmarish.
