This signalled the beginning of a new era: the arrival of electricity would bring great changes. Initially, the power was mainly intended for running electric trams. But soon electricity was also needed for streetlamps and lighting in homes and offices. Electricity use increased so rapidly that fifteen years later a second much larger power station was needed.</span></p>
