If Utrecht came under attack in the Middle Ages, the townspeople had to defend their city. This painting shows four civilians wearing armour and carrying a pike, a sword and an axe. The man at the front carries the city’s red-and-white banner with the image of Saint Martin, the city’s patron saint.
Uit een post in de Kameraarsrekeningen over 1658-1659 is bekend dat inv.nr. 1536, samen met de inv.nrs.2300 en 1537 in opdracht van de vroedschap voor de schoutenkamer van het stadhuis werd geschilderd, waarschijnlijk op initiatief van burgemeester Cornelis Booth. Het voorbeeld was een aquarel van Joost van Attevelt (inv. nr. 4755).
De figuren op het schilderij zijn gekleed in de dracht van de vroege 15de eeuw. Op de achtergrond is vaag een stad te zien.
Er bevindt zich een vroege anonieme kopie in het Utrechtse stadhuis. (paneel, 37,8 x 26,8 cm. Op 22/23-04-1811, cat. nr. 273, p. 56, aangeboden op de veiling bij B. Wild en J. Altheer). Zie ook de opmerkingen bij pendant inv.nr. 1537.
