If a leather shoe nose can keep its shape, then surely it must work with other products too, thought designer Niels van Eijk. That idea brought him to design the Cow Chair, as his graduation project at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Instead of using tanned leather he used a raw, untreated cow hide. The wet hide is stretched around a mould with counter moulds to create the seat. No frame, epoxy or preservative is used; only hide, water, and tension. The hide takes several days to dry – and the result is this chair. [text 2023]
