Have these six figures stepped out of a painting or are we entering an imaginary artwork? Reality seems interchangeable. If we walk around the work, we encounter ourselves, as typical exhibition visitors, in the reflective Plexiglas. Kanovitz confronts us with our own behaviour and our ‘role’ in this space. In 1974, three of these cut-outs were included in Kanovitz’s solo exhibition at Hedendaagse Kunst-Utrecht, looking at a painting with life-size human portraits, including the artist himself.
