According to Greek mythology, Demeter’s daughter Persephone was kidnapped by Hades. Demeter, mourning her daughter, is assisted by Baubo, a domestic help, who is attempting to cheer her up. When lewd comments fail to help, Baubo lifts her skirts and shows Demeter her private parts. The whole resembles a theatrical prop or an altar for some unknown ritual. [text 2023]</span></p>
