Untitled (After Stella, Sidi Ifni II)
Since 2018, Yto Barrada has been working on a series of quilted works, referencing the brightly-coloured, geometric abstract paintings by US artist Frank Stella. These derive their titles from Moroccan cities, such as the coastal town of Sidi Ifni. Barrada dyes her fabrics with plant extracts. For this work, she used bedding from her childhood. Using textile techniques often dismissed as 'folk art', Barrada emphasises that the 'white male canon' of modernism owes much to folklore. [text 2023]
