In the New Utrecht Galleries (Expo 4) Hans Laban (1953) presents the project We Do Have Something In Common. This work has been realised with funds from the K.F. Hein Kunststipendium, which the artist received in 2012.

We Do Have Something in Common is a cross-border project, linking people from all over the world. Hans Laban asked his family, friends, acquaintances and Facebook users to send him photographs of their family and circle of friends. These photographs formed the basis for the project.

Laban then processed the digital images by combining photographs, omitting details and creating new compositions in which people who do not know each other are suddenly brought into contact. He translated the results into etchings and laser engravings, making subtle use of the layers in the original imagery.

Laban has thus created ‘group discussions’, a new sense of familiarity and mutual trust between complete strangers. The continuous slide show and recordings in which people talk about the images they have sent in, provide an additional layer to the project.

‘The work’, as the artist states on his Facebook page, ‘invites us to pay attention to others, in the knowledge that we are not so very different.’
